» Mr. Yergin undoubtedly deserved the Pulitzer Prize for this masterpiece on the history of oil industry. He succeeded in covering about a century and a half of discoveries and developments providing accurate information on historical events, national and international politics and key players, achieving to write a reference book on the subject.
Certainly no author whomsoever can be impartial - and throughout the reading one may well notice that Mr. Yergin is writing from a North-American standpoint. However, partiality is subtile and does not jeopardise his work's strict conformity to facts. Actually, it is only now and then - as in the case of Mossadegh and Nasser - that one might notice that the author could have stepped forward into a less contained critique of Washington's inertia and refrained from a more stark appraisal of Western European role.
Nonetheless, Mr. Yergin is probably the best historian of the subject, faithful to facts, besides being able to imprint a light and entertaining style into his narrative.

» Daniel Yergin made is his name as an oil industry analyst by writing this book. As far as I am aware, this book is the best history of the oil industry ever written.

It is comprehensive and begins prior to the start of the modern oil industry, discusses the U.S. oil industry when U.S. oil production on U.S. soil was a major player in global oil. It then proceeds to the rise of middle east production, the formation of ARAMCO (Saudi American Oil Company), and winds its way to the modern dominance of the oil and gas fields in and about the Persian Gulf. You may need to check for an updated edition - if there is one - or supplement this book with the history of the oil industry within the last ten years. This supplementation is just a function of when this book was published. The book has not been superceded in its field.

This is required reading for any student of the global oil industry.

» Yergin's opus is a compelling read but the plot falls apart in the paperback version - literally! The pages start to separate from the binding before you're 100 pages into your read. If your goal in purchasing a paperback is transportability the loss of entire sections actually makes the book a bit easier to carry around, but don't plan on lending it after you're done.

» As a third generation oilman, this book, while now dated by about eighteen years, gives the reader one of the best oil and gas history books ever written. It was the last book that my father, a wiildcatter for over forty years, read before his death and he too was amazed how Mr. Yergin was able to take such enormous amount of information and distill it down into a narrative as if one were there during the major events that shaped the petroleum industry. If only the so-called envirnomentalists would lift a finger and read books like this, their credibilty as to the subject matter would rise dramatically. What is striking about this particular history book on the petroleum industry, is how Mr. Yergin does a tremendous job in informing the reader how petroleum actually brought human society into what we now call the "modern age" and how the industry truly affected almost every event over the last 150 years, from scientific advancements to world wars. I would put this book into the category of required reading for anyone entering the oil and gas business right up there with "The Greatest Gamblers" written almost a half century ago by Ruth Sheldon Knowles.

» I just finished the Prize after 4 months and it was a great read. The chapters on WWII were outstanding. What America wouldn't give to be back in the days of $40 barrel of oil again! I now have a greater understanding of the Middle East and the history of politics there. Highly recommend this well deserving Pulitzer winner.

» This is an excellent book. In a very comprehensive manner the writers explain why cheap oil really has come to an end and which alternatives do have a change te partially replace oil and why. For every possible alternative for oil they subsequently explain which companies are investment opportunities and which ones are not and why. Naturally all their predictions represent views into the unknown future. However after their logic explanations the future seems to be a little less unknown.

An easy and very interesting read.

» Comments on Chris Nelder quotes.

Re: "Clean" coal? Commercially, it doesn't exist yet, and it probably won't exist in any significant measure for several decades."

After my wife and I recently contracted a sinus infection in China (related to breathing pollution from coal-fired plants), we stayed next door to a coal-fired electric generation plant in Okinawa. Its elaborate smoke-free stack emitted no pollution. Why was it built if not economical in the total sense of the word (before $140 per barrel)?

Re: "Obama's call for a complete overhaul of our national energy policy (if you could even call it that)? Now we're talking. I don't know that he could or would pull it off, but it's definitely the right idea."

How do you retain a semblance of individual freedom and the efficiency of regulated free markets, and have a centraly planned economy like that from which China is at last emerging? Why won't your or "Obama's call for a complete overhaul of our national energy policy" be another great-leap-forward disaster like China's? Will not legally mandated energy policies make us uncompetitive with China, Russia, and other countries?

Re: "Drill offshore and ANWR as soon as possible? Bad idea. I say this not for environmental reasons, but simply from an investing perspective. It won't help very much or for very long, it will take decades to come to market and it will only put us farther out on the limb of fossil fuel dependency. It makes far more financial sense to burn somebody else's oil for as long as possible, and save some of our own for a rainy day, when it will be in much greater demand and much more valuable. Judging from the gathering storm clouds of unstoppable oil prices and declining global oil exports, that rainy day is most certainly coming."

Doesn't "save some for a rainy day" "only put us farther out on the limb of fossil fuel dependency"? And, if "it will take decades to come to market," sholdn't to be ready be ready for "a rainy day"?

Re: "A hundred new nuclear reactors? Never going to happen. We're going to be lucky to replace the existing ones, many of which are nearing the ends of their planned life spans."

I don't find "Never going to happen" a very informative explanation. The US already generates 20% of its electricity from nuclear power and France generates 80%. With $140 oil and electric cars and commuter trains fast coming, replacing old nuclear plants and building new ones is inevitably "going to happen." And why shouldn't it?

Why do you not mention the underlying problem of both energy and environment - unsustainable population growth (doubled in last 50 years).

»
First of all, as to the reviewer who advised the authors should question the environmental impact of our voracious appetite for energy:

The human race could adopt a simpler life. The only way that can happen is if we have a massive die-off of most of the human population. Also, it would be a society where people die young due to lack of modern-day health care, and so forth.

I believe the assumption the authors have made regarding energy demand are sound. People WANT to live what they perceive to be a better life. Some of the aspects of such a life are: advanced health care, the ability to travel, the ability to have a career involving challenging intellectual pursuits, as opposed to having to devote one's life to doing grunt work in order to put food on one's own table.

I am totally prejudiced on this matter. I believe the amenties of modern society have been of tremendous benefit to me. (frankly, if I had lived in older days, due to my physical frailties, I no doubt would have died long ago).

Now a few people may prefer the simpler life, but the vast majority of the people of the world want the amenities that we in the developed world have. I don't see the people of China saying, "hey, we'd rather spend our lives harvesting rice and living in mud huts".

-----

OK, so much for the rant, now on to my review.

The book is a good overview of the peak oil situation. For those not familiar with peak oil, it provides a lot of the fundamental facts that those who have studied this issue have discovered.

For example, the fact that once we can no longer run our society on fossil fuels, IF there is a path to a comparable standard of living in the future, the mainstay of our energy use will be in the form of electricity.

There are a couple of beefs I have with the book, though, which led me not to give it 5 stars.

1). It really is essentially a book about peak oil, not investing. Upon reading the book, it seems clear to me that the book is motivated primarily by the desire to expand awareness of the peak oil problem to a broader cross-section of the public, not to provide people investment ideas for how to profit from the transition. And that is all to the good in my view, because I think the former is a much more important goal. So the title strikes me as a bit disingenuous, perhaps trying to snare people out to make a buck on alternative energy and then give them a tutorial on peak oil, with the names of a few companies thrown in in order to justify the title of the book.

In my case both causes interest me. I am retired and I am spending some of my time trying to become knowledgable about peak oil in case I can find a way to do anything constructive to help fix the problem. And, I am also an investor, and focused heavily on commodities.

I tend to be skeptical about investing in new technologies, however, because it seems to me it is very hard to anticipate who the real winners are going to turn out to be, and stocks in hot new areas that seem to hold promise for solving important problems of society (the biggest of which is energy) tend to be bid up to sky high prices and thus are extremely risky. One specific mention was about the oil refiners like Valero who can process heavy sour crude. Well, right now the refiners are in the dumpster due to low crack spreads, so who knows maybe Valero is a good buy right now (I have been on the fence about buying some myself). On the other hand, the oil producing nations are seeking to do more of the downstream processing of oil themselves. I can't remember whether the book mentions this, I think it probably does. The Middle East states have a population explosion and need jobs for their huge population of young people. So they want to build refineries and sell us gasoline instead of oil.

Hence, I think there is no guarantee that US refiners will even have oil to process in the future. When I hear Bush talk about how we need to build more refineries, well it's no more idiotic than most all the other garbage you are hearing from the politicians, but does Bush realize that the oil producing nations are building refineries and want to just sell us finished products like gasoline? (in his defense, I am sure McCain and Obama are equally clueless on that)

Another point, before I forget: The reviewer that said the book was US centric I do agree had a good point. I live in the US and an pretty US centric myself, but I do recall thinking a couple times while reading the book that in some places it focused on the US when it should have been focusing globally.

Now, my last criticism and perhaps biggest: The authors have a definite bias for renewables and against fossil fuels and nuclear.

Now in the long run I totally agree that we need to switch over to renewables because the nonrenewables won't be there any more.

However, the authors express all the pitfalls in terms of cost, timetables, etc. associated with the big existing sources of energy with great zeal, while they speak glowingly about renewables with very little discussion of the huge pitfalls and challenges.

The most obvious example is that they say very little about the fact that since most renewables produce intermittently (when the wind blows, when the sun shines), for us to transition to a future based on renewable energy requires the development of massive energy storage facilities. And I would say that right now even though renewable sources such as large-scale solar generation are not particularly far along in implementation, large-scale energy storage is at a far earlier stage of infancy. So in my view the development of large-scale energy storage is liable to be an even bigger challenge than the development of large-scale renewable energy production facilities.

But all in all, it was nevertheless a very good book. It covers the issues associated with peak oil to a moderate level, so it is perfect for someone new to peak oil to get a solid grounding in most of the important issues, and someone who has already studied the issue somewhat is liable to learn a few new things from the book as I did.

» The book subject is an important and vital subject on the future of energy prospects. The 'profit' areas of the book lists several companies with good prospects for investing. This should be taken as a list of companies and stocks to study before investing. The authors quote noted authorities as Matthew Simmons and several others giving credibility to their writings.

» They were calling Stephen Leeb 'the $100 a barrel man' when he first predicted this phenomena a few short years ago. Now he's looking at $200 and the mainstream media oil and finance pundits are slowly catching up with him. He is one of a number of writers who are warning that we are now in for an increasingly difficult times economically and that there are ways to benefit from the downturn. He is scathing of Wall Street and associated group think and warns against the herd instinct.

Leeb gives very clear advice on where to place one's investments and these include: gold related stocks and bullion; oil service companies. He recommends 'Chindia' which is the name he gives to the fast growing markets of China and India, targeting specific multinationals which are moving into these markets with products and experience which will make them successful.

This is not just a book on finance and oil though. His frame of reference is much wider drawing, as he does, on the work of two writers who have described what happens when civilizations fall apart. This is the context is which the book is written: the work of Jared Diamond in 'Collapse' and Jo Tainter in 'The Collapse of Complex Societies'. Mr. Leeb is convinced that the worst may be about to happened to our civilization. He gives good advice on how to deal with that and with scenarios of lesser magnitude. I found it most useful.

» "The Coming Economic Collapse" starts with a fairly concise review of the coming decline in availability of fossil fuels. The author, Stephen Leeb, summarizes the inevitable stresses in society that will occur when we no longer have cheap energy. This summary gives a much needed warning about how unpleasant life may become if we pursue our current fuel-guzzling ways.

After a good start, though, the rest of the book falters dramatically. The author spends countless pages giving advice about investing, as if investing will really make anything better in the big picture. He even sinks to the level of giving advice about specific stocks; advice like this is guaranteed to be out of date almost as soon as the book is published.

If you are interested in a good summary of peak oil and the coming economic crisis, the beginning of this book is quite good.

For better understanding, though, about what to do about the crisis, I would recommend the seris of books by Richard Heinberg, especially "The Oil Depletion Protocol."

» but the book does contain information that is provocative and worth consideration.

The writing can best be described as "lazy." If I were reviewing just on the merits of the writing, this book would get 1 star. There is no excuse for anyone to put a literary product on the market that is as shabbily written as this one is.

For starters, Dr. Leeb switches voice four times throughout the book. He starts out with "I," then abruptly begins speaking as "we" on page 13, right in the middle of a chapter. Towards the end of the book, he goes back to "I," then again switches to "we."

The author has a penchant for revising history to fit his theories. For example, he portrays the 70's as just one economic step above the Great Depression, and even goes so far as to blame the homelessness of the 80's on the previous decade's financial turmoil (p 105).

Other examples:
The Iran-Iraq War ended in the "early 80's" (p. 84)
The Great Depression ended in 1944 (p. 110)

And listen to this one: "If the bursting of the tech bubble in 2000 was a rain shower, then a bust of the housing boom today (written in 2006) would be a Category 5 hurricane. But that is exactly why we do not think it will happen." (p 179)

Nevertheless, Dr. Leeb puts forth some provacative concepts that are worthy of consideration, including the role of China and India (Chindia) in Peak Oil scenarios as well as "Groupthink," aka "herd mentality."

In addition, the author lays out a comprehensive investment plan that would, assumably, prosper during a protracted energy crisis. In my opinion, the investment suggestions should only be considered as a starting point for further research, rather than an iron-clad guarantee of success. The author's shoddy writing style casts a dubious shadow on all of his research and theories, and makes his investment suggestions suspect at best.

» If you accept Mr Leeb's apocalyptic Peak Oil scenario and the possibly imminent "collapse of civilization," then the investment advice he offers seems oxymoronic. All the money in the world won't save you when the barbarians are at the gates. (Well, unless maybe you had the foresight and wherewithal to buy a big spread in Paraguay.)

However, not to despair. Mr Leeb's argument is predicated on several faulty assumptions:

1) That oil production has peaked and therefore cannot keep pace with growing demand from developing nations.
2) That America can't survive a severe energy shortage.
3) That gold is an excellent defense against hyperinflation.
4) That $100/barrel oil will result in $10/gallon gasoline.

Obviously, the last assumption has already proven incorrect.

As to supply, oil has always been a commodity managed by the world's most powerful cartels. Production has been suppressed through both sins of commission (read, regime change) and sins of omission (obstructing development of major oil fields). There is no reason to suppose the present situation is any different from past "energy crises": here's a symptom of artificiality --- the price of oil has risen 900% since its most recent low in 1999, yet demand has only risen about 12%. Clearly there is a disconnect between demand and price.

The theory that available oil is limited to shrinking, finite pools of rendered dinosaur fat may well prove a myth fostered by oil producers to "explain" curtailed supply. Consider the possibility that petroleum --- formed as in the lab from hydrogen and methane under high pressure --- leaks out of the Earth, pushed by centrifugal force along crustal fissures? Is it merely coincidental that oil fields invariably flank major fault lines and fracture zones? How else to explain the self-replenishing field recently discovered in the Gulf of Mexico? It is quite possible that supply may prove to be far more abundant than Exxon would have you believe.

On the demand side, Mr Leeb posits inexorable growth -- yet it's easy to see how demand in the world's largest consuming economy, the US, could be reduced significantly, without hardship, if gasoline prices rose to "catastrophic" levels. There's no reason (except our customary extravagance) why US fleet economy couldn't be doubled, simply by our choosing to reduce the weight of our vehicles by a ton or two while decreasing the size of our engines by a couple of liters. No one really needs a 5000-pound SUV that does 0-60 in 7 seconds. Americans are supremely adaptable, if the price is right. One can even envision a future when privately owned, hybrid cars run on a network of rails; the combination of reduced friction, use of electricity while on the "net," and elimination of stop-and-go driving would result in massive fuel savings. For the present, ending our Middle Eastern military adventures would lead to lower energy prices as political tensions fell, along with Pentagon consumption. (The Air Force alone accounts for more than half the federal government's total energy use.)

Gold is deflationary, which is why it's a dangerous investment. Mr Leeb is correct in noting that inflation serves the gov't interest by reducing the true cost of debt. Plus, capitalism doesn't work when prices fall. Deflation must therefore be prevented at all costs, even to the point of hyperinflation if necessary. If there is widespread ownership of gold in response to high inflation, you can bet "jackbooted thugs" will be at the door to confiscate your bullion, just as in the 1930s. "Windfall" profits taxes will be enacted to stop speculation in precious metals instruments.

My investment advice? Put some of your money into the candidacies of those rare politicians who reject the conventional wisdom. The answer to America's energy dilemma lies in the political arena. We must somehow end the oil producers' control over Washington policymakers, freeing Americans to do what they do best: respond creatively and rationally to solve a very solvable problem.

» This is the investor's guide to Peak Oil. If you are not both an investor and a subscriber to the theory behind Peak Oil, then this book will leave you a little lost. As it is, though, this book provides an answer to some questions that are otherwise never discussed elsewhere.

The premise is straightforward: the smart investor makes money by anticipating change and preparing for it. In this case, Leeb first sets out to explain why Peak Oil claims have some merit. He does not sound like Kunstler. He's got a cooler head, which I can really appreciate. He explains the problems at Ghawar as well as the visions of people like Matthew Simmons and Hubbert.

He is not just bucking the assumptions of geopolitics, though. He also takes Modern Portfolio Theory to task. That approach, which asserts that no investor can anticipate anything with regularity, advises people to seek the maximum expected risk-reward return. He goes over some of the famous geniuses who have rejected its assumptions - value investors like Buffett and the reflexivity theory of Soros.

Its not until the last chapter that he makes his specific investment suggestions. They are broad, but not just sectoral. He listed a few companies (FPL, the Canadian Oil Sands, Nabors) as well as sectors (gold, oil, alternative energy).

I read this book in about 10 hours. Its not meant to be that complicated. Maybe if the problems of the future weren't so visible over the horizon, it would need to be more eloquent. But it doesn't need to be, so its not.

» Matthew R. Simmons is one of the smartest oil men on earth. He knows more about Saudi Aramco Oil Company than I do and I lived in Saudi Arabia for 18 years. I love the title, Twilight in the Desert, it's sometimes twilight that's the most beautiful in Sauid Arabia. In the empty quarter, away from all city lights you can see a billion stars. I am a romantic when I remember the most beautiful sight in the world, nightime flare off from the Riyadh Refinery! It's beautiful. This is just a quick review to say that I believe Mr. Simmons is right. 100% right about Saudi Aramco. My concerns about this book is that it doesn't talk about water enough. Saudi's big problems are about water. Water tables are falling. In some places, as much as 16 feet per year. I believe Saudi Arabia might stop exporting by 2018. I have no way of knowing this. It's just a feeling from having worked for Saudi Aramco Oil Company. Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.

» This is a fairly long and detailed book on Saudi oil production. It talks about all of the different oilfields from both an historical and current point of view. Of course the fame of this book lies in the fact that it suggests the strong possibility that some Saudi oilfields may be much closer to depletion or decline than we are led to believe. That's basically a peak oil issue. However, I found the book to be interesting on a different level also. Everyone knows that Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil producing country, but very few people probably know what the oil industry is like there. This book gives a feel for what the oilfields and related processing plants are actually like. In any case, if you are interested in peak oil, you will probably want to get around to reading this book at some point since it is referenced in a lot of other works.

» This book is well written, with a lot of research....however, I do not completely agree with the author's conclusions. A book on Peak Oil. Well worth reading, but the author does not take into account the progress of technology and its significance in extracting the precious oil from the ground.
Many people do not understand that oil fields left behind by oil companies still retain a great deal of the original estimates locked within its stone. The problem is that it becomes too expensive to extract for use in the economy. That will change. Further, the US has enough oil shale to rival the largest fields in the world....additionally, the US has its own tar sands that few know about. For that matter, Russia owns two large tar sands regions within its borders. Then there is the most recent, unconfirmed, find from Petrobras off-shore of Brazil that is reputed to have ~33 billion barrels of reserves......although this remains to be proven. But it does not discount the Tupi field of the Brazilians, who are about to become major oil exporters in the next several years.
If you just take "conventional" oil and current "conventional" extraction methods, his book has a lot of credence....however, things never remain static and companies are investing large sums of money to find new ways of extracting oil from known fields that are dormant.
Good book, worth reading, but should be read in conjunction with opposing viewpoints as well.

» Twilight in the Desert is widely accepted to be the best-written, best-researched, and most-informed book about peak oil and Saudi Arabia as an oil-exporter. Matthew Simmons is the foremost authority on peak oil and even the commodity in general. Whenever there is an article about this subject in The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, you can be sure to find Simmons' name somewhere within. Twilight in the Desert certainly takes a particular viewpoint, but Simmons backs up his arguments with meticulously researched facts rather than opinion. The amount of research Simmons has done and the thousands upon thousands of pages he has gone through are astounding. His synthesis of this information and analysis are simply delightful. More than just dwelling on Saudi Arabia, Simmons goes into the science and geology of peak oil in an interesting and straightforward way. His arguments are beautifully laced and cogently pieced together to the point of inspiring the reader about an otherwise complicated subject.
Twilight of the Desert is so well written, it may actually be more a work of art than the academic tome it appears. If you are remotely interested in oil, I cannot recommend Twilight in the Desert highly enough.

» Having read the book in 2008, and knowing that Mr. Kunstler wrote it 4 years earlier, the writer is very astute in correctly forecasting the sub-prime/debt crises and the oil price increases.

He does a credible job of explaining why oil may not be there for all time. Unfortunately, his treatment of the alternative fuel and new technologies is rather brief and he seems to dismiss any solution, as it would interfere with his relished doomsday scenario.

Kunstler brings up valid points, but his suggested outcome (a return to a version of an 18th century rural lifestyle) is rather far fetched and does not do justice to mankind's creativity and tenacity in addressing the real energy challenges we are faced with.

» The book was interesting and informative. There were a lot of facts, ideas and concepts brought up that made it very worthwhile to read.

As would be expected, there were a few points where I disagreed with the author, but that is to be expected in any controversial book.

I highly recommend it.
» I first read "The Long Emergency" by taking it out from the library. Then I decided I wanted my own copy so I could make high-lighted sections and annotations. Then I ordered an additional, used, copy so I can send it around to my family and friends without giving up my original copy. James Howard Kunstler gained credibility with me from the fact that I am living through the very conditions predicted when the book was published in 2005, such as so long to cheap gasoline and heating fuel.

» This book was both an education and an affirmation of suspicions and doubts
I've long held. Well written and compelling. Mr. Kunstler paints a detailed
picture of a broad, multifaceted landscape. He holds up a mirror to our follies and greed. It is a clarion call to change. The section on the evolution of modern economics was especially enlightening. This is a book you will want to share with friends you care about.

» The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler is a sobering view of a post- 'peak-oil' America. 'Peak-oil' refers to the point in time when the maximum rate of global petroleum production is reached, after which the rate of production enters its terminal decline. Basically, the point when we've pumped out more than half of the oil that has ever been created. There are many estimations for when this will occur, as there are many factors that make it nearly impossible to predict. For instance, it is in the producer's best interest to keep their reserves secret...Saudi Arabia has maintained that they have around 260 billion barrels, but that figure has not changed in 40 years. Sure, we can keep finding new reserves and creating new technologies that allow us to reach oil that was previously uneconomical...but this cannot go on forever. Kunstler takes a rather pessimistic view, saying the peak will occur between 2000 and 2010.

This means we have used about half of all the oil that was ever created...great, right? That sounds like we have plenty of time. The only problem is the world uses a bit more oil these days than it has in the past, actually a lot more. In fact we've used 25% of all the world's reserves in the past decade. The author estimates at current trends, we have about 35-40 years left of oil...the oil that is the hardest to get...and if it takes more input energy than you get out, it is not a winning proposition. Bottom line, we WILL run out of oil someday, it's only a matter of when.

The problem with this, we soon realize, is that our entire way of life - modern western civilization - has been created and subsidized by copious amounts of cheap energy. Contemplate the rise of technology after the discovery of oil...kerosene lamp, car, plane, transistor, computer, space flight...all within about 100 years. When this cheap source of energy is expended, what happens? Perhaps a regression to a time prior to the industrial revolution? Unfortunately, there is no inherent guarantee that human advancement will continue; especially in a continuous, unbroken, upward slope. There have been regressions in the past; mighty and advanced civilizations have faltered before...

The optimist in us all believes that some magic technology will rescue us, perhaps some alternate fuel that is in the works right now. The author does a pretty good job of systematically raining on the parade of every legitimate alternate fuel source. Natural Gas, Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, Coal, Hydroelectric, Solar, Wind, Synthetic Oil, Thermal Depolymerization, and Nuclear are all discussed and largely discounted.

After a few chapters discussing how he feels global warming is going to get us and how the global economy is destined to fail and how the suburbs are the bane of human existence, he hits us with his view of life in America without cheap oil: The Long Emergency.

I'm not going to ruin the ending, you'll have to check it out for yourself. I will just say that the book is very pessimistic, and at times it seems as though he is relishing the thought of his post-apocalyptic existence. The biggest problem with the book is that I can't really find too many faults with his logic (he was wrong about Y2k, however). Peak oil is either upon us now, or will be in our lifetime. Any alternative that we currently have is either more expensive or has other major drawbacks. I feel it may come down to not 'if'; but 'when', and 'how severe'. I highly recommend this book. While I don't think (and certainly don't hope) the future will be as dire as depicted; I do think there are some important insights to be gleaned concerning overall trends that could be instrumental in making sound long-term decisions: where to live/retire, employment, investing, etc. These insights can also be leveraged in everyday decision making: what we eat, what we buy, who we buy from, etc.; that may lessen or even prevent The Long Emergency. But you don't have to take my word for it...head down to your local library and check it out for yourself.
» I was recently sent a preview copy of an upcoming publication, "Energy Victory," written by Robert Zubrin. The book attempts to layout a plan for America to break free of its oil addiction a path that, he claims, current US Policy will never achieve. Although the book's main focus is on energy solutions, Zubrin does spend a significant amount on time on the genealogy of terror, America's tumultuous relationship with OPEC and debunking myths.

Having not paid much attention to the history of terrorism (although I would argue that Americans, should spend more time learning about this), I found this section interesting. It brings to light a little more urgency for Americans to find solutions to replace oil that is purchased from the volatile Middle East - an area that is obviously not friendly to Americans.

So what are the solutions, sensei? Renewable fuels such as ethanol and methanol. Before you start arguing that ethanol is not a solution because it has less energy, this is not true. Ethanol has a positive net energy. Updated in 2004, the most definitive analysis (by USDA) concludes that for every 100 BTUs used to grow corn and process it into ethanol, 167 BTUs of ethanol is produced. In other words, ethanol generates 67 percent more energy than it takes to produce. Zubrin explains that the misinformation has been fueled by ethanol detractor David Pimentel, in conjunction with Tad Patzek, whose research is so out of date and scientifically unsound that his own university, Cornell University, discredits the research.

As ethanol is gaining traction, with the support of the Big Three, especially GM in bringing Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) to market, and more than 50 percent of American's fuel being blended with some percentage of ethanol, and more than 1300 E85 stations across the U.S., Zubrin says that many people are not happy with the developments. "Not everyone is happy with this development, of course, and the reasons are plain to see. The 4.9 billion gallons of US ethanol produced in 2006 took ten billion dollars away from the oil cartel. Thus it is hardly surprising to find the ethanol program regularly denounced by journalistic hired guns and other business analysts associated with oil industry funded think tanks, as well as by ideological libertarians whose sensibilities it offends." Ha, take that!

Zubrin continues in his book to layout longterm plan for reducing America's energy dependence on foreign oil using an "alcohol economy," and spends some time ruminating about how the world can help defeat global warming while simultaneously reducing fossil fuel use. Interestingly enough, he supports raising all countries' Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which may come at the short-term expense of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, but over time, as fossil fuels are phased out, greenhouse gas emissions would decrease.

This is not a lighthearted reading for those who want the top line view of an issue. This is a very technical book (scientific terms, chemical equations, etc.) that delves fairly deep into each topic he covers but there are moments of humor that keep the book moving. Ultimately, I liken Energy Victory to the famous 1776 book, Common Sense, by Thomas Paine. Paine authored the first book on freedom from British rule, and Zubrin has authored the book on freedom from foreign oil.
» Brilliant ideas for solving the recurring energy crises once and for all! Must-read for every American, especially politicians. Thank you Mr. Zubrin!

» Great historical information on the middle east. Lines out the strategy to become energy independent in short order. Fabulous book.

» Gas is $3.80. OPEC continues to bleed us. The Saudi's continue to export radical Islam financed by our oil dollars. Environmentalist continue to obstruct. To counter these factors Zubrin lays out a solid, cogent plan utilizing METHANOL not corn based ETHANOL. This plan uses existing technology not pie in the sky maybe here in 10 years hopes and dreams.

» This publication opened my eyes to a potential future free of foreign dependency for energy. I'm surprised that the general public is unaware of several of facts presented in this book. I would highly encourage everyone to read this book

» When I decided to read this book, I did so with the expectation of learning something only after wading through a great degree of partisan political rhetoric. It did not take me long to realize that Mr. Roberts' book is not what I had expected.

He makes this complex issue accessible to the layman looking to familiarize himself with not only oil, but the energy economy. Rather choose a side and engage in partisan sniping, he tells the good, the bad, and the ugly of the policies advocated by every party involved in the energy debate. Not only does he analyze our present situation, but he also studies our several possible ways forward into a new energy economy.

If I were pressed to make a complaint, it would be that I read the original hardcover edition of the book. A lot of the speculation regarding "worst case" scenarios involve $50 a barrel oil. Now that we are nearly $100 past that worst case, the educated speculation portrayed in the book should be coming to pass in the market. I would like to see either a completely updated 2008 edition or at least one with an updated preface.

» Overall, the author has done a good job of demonstrating the seriousness of the oil price increase problem. However,he needed to emphasize that the problem is not one of running out of oil per se ,but of running out of the low to medium priced oil that, for instance, the world's agricultural farm businesses are based on and accustomed to.The author needed to emphasize the impeccable nature of the mathematical and statistical modeling done by M K Hubbert in his original 1969 paper( Deffeyes's minor correction of 2005 is well within the 1 to 5 % error allowed in science )and the relative accuracy of his predictions. For instance,he predicted that peak American oil production occurred in 1969.Hubbert was "wrong".It occurred in 1970.The fundamental point is that PEAK world production has been obtained.Hubbert's original paper never stated that the world would run out of oil in 2000.The world will essentially be out of oil around 2125-2150.
I have deducted one star because of the misleading title of the book. The title should be changed to " The End of Low to Medium Priced Oil:On the Edge of a World of $200 a Barrel Oil ".

» Good book, though quickly becoming outdated as we slide down the post-peak oil decline. I wish Roberts had cut about 50 pages, though; he starts to repeat himself in the second half of the book, as he revisits ideas he detailed in the first half. By page 276, I don't need to be reminded what comprises the hydrocarbon economy yet again.

» This book spends a great deal of energy looking at the overall circumstances of world oil. The text is stretched with repetitive writing. To my mind Richard Heinberg's "The Party's Over" is far more clear and to the point. Fossil fuel is rapidly depleting. Heinberg hits this hard and in detail, Roberts tends to journalistically dither....

» This book gave a very well rounded, all-inclusive view of where the oil industry started, is now, and is going. I had a hard time putting the book down; it had a way of invoking a lot of interesting thoughts. If everyone in America read this book, we'd be half-way there.

» I read a few chapters and quit. I found it uninteresting. It now sits on my shelf.

» I recently heard Alexandra speak at the Jackson Hole Writers Conference and she had me at hello. Her passion for finding and telling Colton's story was as essential as breathing, as drinking water. As she worked on the story, spending time away from her family to drive the wide open roads of Wyoming or to spend time on the oil patch, the sacrifice seemed worth it. For as she says, all there is and will ever be is the story teller and the story told. I was most touched by how much she lived the story. When spending hour after hour writing the story, she would occasionally tell her kids, "When you set the table tonight, set a place for Colton." Her compassion and care come across throughout the writing as she carefully weaves together the beauty and tragedy of Colton H. Bryant. She "gave away" the story during reading; and even when I knew the ending, I found the words and scenes and descriptions stacking themselves around me, creating a place of beauty and sorrow and rest. I spent 10 days in Wyoming, paddling, driving, attending a rodeo, falling in love with the vastness of land. Fuller's book gave me a story of people and place to help me come to know this place on an even deeper level.

» Through her investigative reports of the effect of the oil industry on the western way of life, Alexandra Fuller stumbled across a story that grabbed a hold of her heart and pen. A generational oil patch worker didn't say enough about this simple Wyoming boy with a spirit for forgiveness and laughter who had but one wish: to be like his father. Fuller takes on the voice of Wyoming's brutal elements, endearing family and friends, and the soul of its society to present a gut-wrenching story that will haunt you after the final page has fallen flat between the covers. She delivers this story in prose alive with the harsh vastness of the wild Wyoming west and the loyalty of the souls who live it, work it and love it.

I sojourned quickly through "The Legend of Colton H. Bryant," tugged along by a steady, poetic voice that drew me into this poignant story of an American boy who lived a short life as a grown man. This sheds light on big oil and our country's glutton thirst for more--at all cost.

» One of the best books I've ever read. As a new resident of Wyoming(Jackson Hole), this book introduced me to the real Wyoming, lending a personal feel to the towns and people among the "vast emptiness". My drives through La Barge, Marbleton, Big Piney, Kemmerer and the like, will never be the same, enhanced by the understanding of the people that work and live in these towns. That being said, this is a book for those who have never set foot in Wyoming, for those who have never ventured from big city America. This book writes about the unsung heroes of our country.

The character development and dialogue will have the reader racing through pages while at the same time pausing frequently to postpone the end to some of the best reading since A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was published.

»
There is a Talmudic expression "He who destroys a life, destroys a world entire." Alexandra Fuller captured a "world" from beginning to end. By the end of it, and after it...you are set to wondering about every anonymous teenager you see working in a fast food joint - for that was one memory I had of Wyoming - but it might as well be anywhere these days . You wonder about the things they are going through (or will go through) and whether you would be in tears if you knew. The more you think about that, the more likely the answer is yes. Which brings up the second half of the saying, which concerns saving a world by saving a life. If you read this book, you will get to know Kaylee and Bill, Jake and Colton, and you will be the better for it. And you will be forced to wonder if Jake had an anxious premonition about his buddy the night of the accident. You will wonder about the timing of the sun dog and about other things that we don't much talk about. And after a while you wonder if UPL can afford handrails on their rigs or requirements that rigs should always have at least one experienced person around at all times. You wonder about the safety officer whose main concern while Colton lay dying was obtaining a blood test to exonerate the company(!). Lots of things to wonder about. If you don't want to be set to wondering, don't buy this book.

» Bryce positions the book as a comprehensive treatise on energy independence, and it's not. Which for me knocks the book down to 1 star.

Bryce doesn't just select his sources (as would any author), he problematically also selects within his sources, and in so doing at least twice misrepresents the message of the source (one misrepresentation described by me below, and another by an earlier reviewer).

So be informed if you read this book (as several earlier reviewers have said). Bryce has his theme, and he can't be bothered to name and then debunk some "facts" that might discredit it.

The main technology Bryce ignores is the coal-to-liquid (CTL) transformation of coal into methanol (wood alcohol, NOT ethanol (grain alcohol)). A major proponent of CTL methanol claims the technology is "clean" and costs the gas equivalent of $1/gallon (50c/gallon methanol, with methanol having 50% the energy of gas). If true, Bryce's theme that energy independence is a fantasy is DOA, so Bryce must debunk the claim. Yet Bryce doesn't even mention it, even though he must know about it (see below).

(Methanol is a mature fuel technology for the internal combustion engine (ICE), as the ICE was invented with methanol in mind and the Indy 500 was run on it until very recently (when ethanol, via a marketing agreement, replaced it). For a fast and interesting read on methanol fuel technology and how it might be able to break imported oil's monopoly of the transportation energy market, see:

-"Energy Victory" (Robert Zubrin, Prometheus Books 2007).

For a drier but more technical read on how methanol could replace oil, see:

-"Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy" (George Olah (a Nobel Prize winner), WILEY-VCH 2007).)

The major CTL methanol proponent referred to above is the Set America Free coalition (SAF), a lobby group pushing for energy independence that Bryce trashes by name (either the group or its prominent members) at least 20 times (I stopped counting), for its (supposed) politics and its (actual) support for ethanol. I assume (hope?) Bryce is well-versed in SAF's policy platform.

In Chapter 12 ("The Ethanol Scam") Bryce quotes a SAF statement on ethanol sourced from SAF's policy platform document as part of his argument to show that ethanol is a scam. (Source is on page 176, Chapter 12, note 131.) A fair use of a source.

My problem is that Bryce ignores SAF's claim that CTL methanol is clean and economic, even though that position is in the paragraph following the one Bryce's ethanol quote comes from, so he must know about it. (Bryce quotes from page 3, paragraph 3, of the SAF document, the paragraph outlining SAF's position on ethanol, while page 3, paragraph 4 outlines SAF's position on methanol.)

The lesser technology Bryce ignores concerns the problem of the volume of biomass needed to produce cellulosic alcohol. Bryce says the volume that needs to be moved to fuel plants requires far more trucks than it's worth (p. 178), while Zubrin says on-site "flash pyrolysis" reduces the volume and solves the problem ("Energy Victory", Robert Zubrin, Prometheus 2007, p. 155).

So are SAF and Zubrin wrong? I have no idea. Bryce doesn't mention their most intriguing ideas, so he doesn't need to debunk them in his "complete energy independence treatise".

(Robert Zubrin is listed as a member of SAF on its website, George Olah is not listed on the website. I have no relation to SAF, and had not heard of the organization before reading Zubrin's book.)

» He makes many good points and provides much needed facts about the reality of worldwide energy inTERdependence, the inadequacies of the alternatives and the fallacy of giving up fossil fuels.

Liberals will be shaking their heads in delight as he rips Bush, Cheney, the war in Iraq, etc. I'm convinced he is one of your own - even though he claims to be neutral.

But he is a pragmatist when it comes to the main topic of this book - our energy needs. We simply have to quit lying to ourselves about what can be done about the challenges we face. Wind power, solar and biofuels cannot provide even a fraction of the overall energy needs of the nation. This book does
